highway-919073_960_720Traffic is the single most important element in a website. Without traffic, no one will read your content, click your links, or buy your products/services. But how exactly do you attract people to your website? There are dozens of ways to increase web traffic, some of which we’re going to discuss in today’s blog post.

Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization (SEO) involves modifying a website so that’s more likely to rank higher in the search engines for its target keywords. Not surprisingly, high-ranking websites attract more visitors than their low-ranking counterparts. SEO isn’t easy, however, as it involves a combination of both on-page and off-page techniques to succeed.

Publish Viral Content

Of course, another way to increase web traffic is to publish viral content. Think about what type of content your audience is interested in reading. Now, try to identify trending, viral topics around that niche. It may take some trial and error, but just a single piece of viral content can easily yield thousands of new visits. Furthermore, all of this traffic encourages higher search rankings, compounding its traffic-boosting effects.

Partner with Other Sites

Have you thought about partnering with other websites in your niche? You can share links, for instance, to boost your site’s traffic. This is a you-scratch-my-back-and-I-scratch-yours kind of deal. Reciprocal linking benefits both sites, as they share visibility and traffic. Just remember to check the other site to which you are linking on a regular basis to make sure your link is still live. It’s also recommended that you partner with sites that are affiliated with your own site, but not necessarily a direct competitor (you don’t want to send your competitor free traffic).

Social Media Marketing

Studies show that nearly 3 in 4 adults in the United States use social media. As webmaster, you can leverage the power of social media to generate more traffic. Assuming you have high-quality content published on your website, post links to it on social media networks like Facebook, Twitter and Google+. Doing so funnels visitors from these social networks to your site. It’s an easy and cost-effective way to boost web traffic, all for a minimal investment of your time and energy.

Paid Search Ads

If you really want to boost your website’s traffic, try buying ad space on the leading search engines. Both Google and Bing have their own self-serving ad platforms, Adwords and Bing Ads respectively. Using these platforms, you can create custom ads that send visitors to your site once clicked. Google Adwords and Bing Ads are pay-per-click (PPC) networks, which as the name suggests, is a format in which the advertiser only pays when someone clicks their ad.
