From Panda and Penguin to Hummingbird and Possum, Google’s search ranking algorithm has gone through countless updates over the years. However, even after all of these updates, backlinks remain one of the most influential signals in determining a website’s search ranking. If you want to climb the search rankings in Google, you should follow these tips when building backlinks.
#1) Attract Links with Content
Publishing high-quality content is a great way to attract backlinks. When other webmasters see your content, they’ll link back to it from their own sites and web properties. Think about who your target audience is and write relevant content that’s likely to be shared by them.
#2) Don’t Pay for Links
While buying links may seem like an easy way to bolster your website’s search ranking, it could actually have the opposite effect by lowering your search rankings. Google views paid links as rankings manipulation, meaning there’s a good chance it will lower your site’s search rankings. Unless you’re willing to take that risk (you shouldn’t), avoid paying for backlinks.
#3) Monitor Your Links
How many links does your website have, and where are those links located? Rather than estimating how many links are pointing to your site, use a tool to monitor them. Google Webmaster Tools has a built-in link analysis tool, though there are many other third-party analytics tools that can also check your site’s backlinks. Regardless of which one you prefer, you need to check and monitor your site’s backlinks on a regular basis.
#4) Descriptive Anchor Text
When creating links, try to get into the habit of using descriptive anchor text. Some webmasters make the mistake of repeatedly using the same anchor text over and over, typically for the keyword they are trying to rank. But Google has recently said that overuse of anchor text is against its Webmaster Guidelines; therefore, it could hurt your site’s rankings. To prevent this from happening, diversify your anchor text with multiple keywords and keyword phrases.
#5) Choose Relevant Sources
Google now emphasizes quality of backlinks over quantity. In the past, 1,000 links from irrelevant sources would have yielded greater SEO value than a handful of links from relevant sources — but this is no longer the case. Now Google places a greater value on link quality, which is why it’s important to create links on relevant sources.
#6) Make Your Content Easy to Share
A simple way to encourage more backlinks is to make your content easy to share. When publishing new content on your website, for instance, include social media sharing buttons. Users can then click these buttons to immediately share your content with their friends and followers on social media; thus, creating backlinks to your site in the process.
