You’ve got a great product or service, right? You have reasonable prices and you really help your customers. So sales should be easy.

But then there are those competitors!

Of course they aren’t as good as you, and they have higher prices! But still, there they are. Stealing your customers away and making sales a struggle for your company.

MonopolyManWouldn’t it be nice to have a monopoly? Wouldn’t it be nice if you were the only game in town? How easy would sales be then?

So why don’t you get yourself a monopoly?

I’ll let you in on a little secret: this is what all good marketers do. This is our magic and it is why you pay us the big bucks. Because we know that as long as you have lots of competition, sales will be an uphill battle. But once you are a monopoly, sales become easy. If your customers want it, then they buy it from you because you are the only game in town.

So how do you get a monopoly?

The easy answer is that you offer something different. I call this the easy answer because chances are extraordinarily high that you already are offering something very different from your competition. Your product or service is unique in some way. And even for those few companies that literally have exactly identical products and services (yes, I am talking to all the captive insurance agents out there), you deliver it in a unique way. Your knowledge, perspective, and personality are unlike that of anyone else. So your customer’s experience will be very different from the customer shopping with the company down the hall – even if they are buying the exact same insurance policy!

Now for the hard answer…

The hard answer is that you LOOK LIKE you offer something different. This is the marketing magic. You need to clearly and powerfully show that you are selling something different. You need to frame your entire company identity as a monopoly. You need to look like the only company out there that has what your customers need!
